Sam’s story

Just before his 18th birthday, Sam's behaviour changed rapidly. He became afraid of what was happening to him. He was terrified of sharing his symptoms and fears and felt immense pressure to keep it to himself. He ran away, and then tried to end his life by taking an overdose.

Thankfully it failed. Sam went home and told his parents what he was going through. He went into hospital, but when he came out, he had lost many of his friends, and wasn't sure what he was going to do next. Then someone told Sam about Rethink’s programme for young people. And in his words, it “completely changed my life”.

Sam spent six months on the recovery programme learning how to take care of his emotional wellbeing and how to manage his own recovery. Rethink developed the project in collaboration with young people to help teach recovery skills, boost self-esteem and give peer-led support. Sam says:

“Everything’s picked up. I now know I’m not alone and I can share with my new friends. I speak about what happened and they understand because they know what it’s like.

Rethink gave me my family back too, as I didn’t know how to speak to them.

It’s made me believe in myself."
