Worthing Rethink Mental Health Carers Group
Open to: Carers
Worthing
Please see details below
Group Coordinator: Peter, Mark, Pam and Sue
We are a peer-led support group for the carers, family members and friends of people with lived experience of mental illness. We also welcome people living with mental illness who wish to attend, as both sets of people share similar issues.
We have three groups running:
1. A virtual meeting runs on the 2nd Monday of each month at 7pm. Contact us for details.
2. A face-to-face meeting is held on the 4th Monday of each month from 7pm at Meadowfield Hospital, Swandean, Arundel Road, Worthing BN13 3EF. Every month, we try to arrange for a guest speaker to talk to the group about their specialist area but always leave time for people to share concerns and receive support.
3. A drop-in session takes place on the first Wednesday of the month between 10:30am and 1pm, at The Happy Teapot Cafe, 7 Richmond Rd, Worthing BN11 1PN (opposite Worthing Library). Stay for 5 minutes, the whole time, or anywhere in between.

Our group aims to be a safe place for carers to offload their problems and support each other, knowing they will not be judged. We have all had personal experience of caring for someone close to us, and so we understand what it can be like supporting someone through a challenging treatment path. We have occasional speakers, and try to be involved in local decision making to help improve the situations of carers and their loved ones.

Our long running group is open to anyone who has a brother or sister with lived experience of mental illness. The relationship between siblings is different to any other relationship, and our group reflects that. We can give a good insight into how mental illness can change relationships and discuss the ways you can support your sibling and the rest of your family, both emotionally and practically. The group usually meets roughly 9 times a year, on the last Wednesday of the month, but from time to time this may change. We mainly support siblings whose brother or sister has schizophrenia or bi-polar but will not turn anyone away who cannot find support elsewhere. The best way to contact the group is via our email address: rethinklondonsibs@gmail.com. All will receive a warm welcome.
