Our Wakefield Carers group has been meeting for several years now. We are a friendly group that meets once a month in an afternoon. We offer a safe, relaxing space for people caring for someone with mental illness to share what sort of month they've had. This typically leads to members offering support and encouragement to each other. We never put pressure on anyone to share. We just offer the space for people to do so freely and without judgement, so our members feel less isolated and more supported. As we meet in an afternoon, we provide a simple lunch buffet with tea and coffee that we can enjoy together while we talk. On occasions, we also arrange social outings outside our regular meetings. Our group is open to people supporting a friend or family member in secure services living with mental illness. We recognise the feelings of frustration, isolation, and often stigma some experience when supporting someone in that setting, not to mention how challenging and overwhelming it can be to navigate through the secure care system. Recognise Me! provides an opportunity for our members to come together in a safe, non-judgemental space, to feel heard, and seen, so our members can talk freely, provide support and encouragement to one another, and learn from each other so our members feel less isolated, more supported, and empowered in what can be a very disempowering position to be in. As a voluntary led peer support group, we do not give advice, however we can sign post our members seeking professional support to relevant carers, and advice services.
