The Green Health Group is based in Daventry at the community gardens and has been established for 15 years. The group was formed through a link with a Rethink Carers Group called Daventry Carers.
Head Gardner, Tony Newby, oversees the garden on a regular basis with the assistance of around 15 volunteers. These volunteers are people with lived experience of severe and enduring mental illness. The garden is known in the area and has had volunteers referred via GPs social prescribing.
The garden does not sell its produce, but instead asks for donations. The group invests this money in seeds, plants and equipment for future use. A new venture this year is the building of a chicken house.
The produce from the gardens has won numerous prizes at the annual “Daventry Show”. They grow onions, potatoes, tomatoes, broad beans, green beans, sweetcorn and herbs and a glorious array of dahlias and plants for hanging baskets.
The group helps its members to share their experiences and create a sense of unity whilst finding joy in being outside and gardening.
