About Rethink Advice and Information Service

We give advice to people with a diagnosis or symptoms of mental illness who live in England and are 18 or over. We also advise their carers, loved ones, or professionals working with them.

We are a small team. When we are fully staffed, we are made up of 5 Advisors, a Volunteer Coordinator, a Team Leader, an Information Lead, a Service Manager, and Volunteers.

Our service is:

  • free,
  • independent,
  • confidential,
  • impartial,
  • evidence-based,
  • equality-based and non-discriminatory,
  • non-judgemental, and
  • empathetic.

You can find out what things we give advice on and how to contact us on this page.

We are not a crisis or emergency service and do not offer emotional support or counselling. If you need help now, see this page.

Some of the things we cannot offer advice or support on are:

  • Debt advice
  • Ordinary housing advice – such as disputes about repairs, challenging council banding decisions, advice about eviction notices
  • Immigration
  • Family disputes, such as child custody or access
  • Civil legal procedures
  • Childhood mental health
  • Emotional support, counselling, or a listening service
  • Crisis support
  • Casework
  • Issues that do not involve mental illness, like physical health, dementia, learning disabilities, brain injury, or autistic spectrum disorders
  • Form filling, such as PIP applications
