Rethink Remembers: The George Michael Charity of Hope Tribute Fund
Everyday we have the wonderful memories and legacy of George Michael’s music, the stories of his brilliant sense of humour, and on occasion, would get to see his authentic true side. George only knew one way that was truth, generosity and compassion from the heart. To us the fans, he was always just George. He struggled with his fame but managed most of the time how he could use it as a force for good. However his bouts with depression kept him out of the public eye for years and away from writing and creating music. He believed his privilege was being able to help others and he did with charity performances, anonymous donations and dedications from proceeds of his beloved songs.
George would bless all of our efforts in removing the stigma of mental illness, giving people the resources or just the encouragement to get help that he himself may have not done at the time or way he should have. It is important for GMLP ( The George Michael Legacy Project) to focus light on this cause, in hopes of helping others.
By speaking openly this can serve as a source of strength for others. The causes of mental illness are not singular. Recovery does not follow a formulaic process but is highly personalized. GMLP wants people to openly seek access to the support they need, and lead them towards positive steps on their road to a new life.
One of the first hurdles to overcome lies in changing the perception of mental illness. It’s a functional disease, and should be treated as such. Stigma drives individuals into secrecy, and when they don’t feel they can trust anyone, they will not seek help. We need to break down the walls and the cycle surrounding mental illness once and for all. Life is too precious not to find happiness and a gifted path.
We humbly ask you to help us the George Michael Legacy Project to share in building that world of hope and light in honor of George Michael. Although mental illness has no timeframe, some suggested dates for donations are, June 25 his birthday, and his celebration of life, December 25.
