We respond to review of the Care Quality Commission

15 October 2024

A review of the Care Quality Commission, which monitors the performance of health and social care services, has been published today. It finds significant failings in how the CQC is holding services to account and ensuring high standards.

Lucy Schonegevel, Director of Policy and Practice at Rethink Mental Illness, said:

“Two of the most persistent issues affecting those living with severe mental illness are access to care and the quality of that care. In recent years, we have frequently heard heartbreaking accounts about the lack of patient safety for people when they are at their most vulnerable, with inquiries taking place across the country. While the overwhelming majority of health and social care professionals are committed to providing the best possible support, we need both improved accountability and sufficient funding to uphold standards in cases where individuals, cultures, or systems fall short.”
