The Assisted Dying Bill - The key points explained

Below we explain the key points of the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, known as the Assisted Dying Bill.

Update, April 2026: In April 2026 the bill was blocked in the House of Lords after more than 1,200 amendments were tabled. MPs and peers who led the Bill have promised to bring it back to parliament. We will update this information if there are any further developments.

The content below was published on 8 July 2025.

Rethink Mental Illness is neutral on the Bill. We believe it is a matter for Parliament to decide if it becomes law in England and Wales, and the details of the law. We are aware that people living with mental illness and their loved ones will have a range of views on the proposed new law. With some strongly in favour, and some strongly against.

This briefing provides an overview of the Bill and who it applies to. It also covers some of the concerns that have been raised about the Bill about mental capacity and mental illness.
