Rethink Shrewsbury Carers Support Group
Open to: Carers
Shrewsbury
The group meets on the third Wednesday of every month between 2.00pm and 4.00pm.
We are a long-standing peer support group for carers that offers information and support relating to mental health. We do this by sharing experiences and organising speakers to talk about mental health topics. Group members stay informed about local mental health matters and campaign on local issues. New members are always welcome.

We are pleased to announce our group is meeting once again after a period of suspension due to COVID. Our Wakefield Carers group has been meeting for several years now. We are a friendly group that meets once a month in an afternoon. We offer a safe, relaxing space for people caring for someone with mental illness to share what sort of month they've had. This typically leads to members offering support and encouragement to each other. We never put pressure on anyone to share. We just offer the space for people to do so freely and without judgement, so our members feel less isolated and more supported. As we meet in an afternoon, we provide a simple lunch buffet with tea and coffee that we can enjoy together while we talk. On occasions, we also arrange social outings outside our regular meetings. New members are warmly welcome, but please do contact us before attending.

Southwest Carers is a voluntarily led peer support group for carers, who face the challenge of loving and caring for someone who has borderline personality disorder (BPD). We meet twice a month on Wednesday evenings in Zoom meetings where we offer a safe and friendly space to share worries, experiences, and our hopes for the future. We work together to access guidance and practical advice from experts in BPD and try to raise the profile of this distressing mental disorder. Please contact us by our email and we will get back to you with more details of the next meeting and to let you know more about the group. Group members say that they feel less alone and really value being able to talk to people who understand the complexities of caring for someone with BPD.

We are Carers Altogether; we are a friendly group that meet once a month in the morning. Offering a safe relaxed space for people caring for someone living with mental illness the opportunity to share what sort of month they’ve had and do so freely and without judgement. We provide information, share knowledge, skills and offer support and encouragement to one and another. For many of us it’s about enjoying the company and support of others in a similar position as to ours, and always over a relaxing cuppa and a few biscuits. New members are always welcome.

May 2024: Do you support or care for a partner, child, family member or friend with a mental illness and want to talk to someone in a similar situation? It may be that you’re feeling a little isolated and seeking some support and respite for yourself. Whatever it is, our voluntary led peer support groups may be able to help. They offer a safe, confidential, friendly, and welcoming space, where members can share their experiences without judgement from others. That’s because you’re amongst people that share similar experiences to you, who understand what you’re going through and the challenges that often arise when trying to access support for those you support and care for. In addition to being a place to receive mutual peer support, and encouragement, the groups can offer further information and signposting to services that may be able to offer further support to you in your caring role, and the person you support or care for. If you would be interested in being involved with such a group or would like to see a group for carers running in Salisbury or any of the surrounding areas, then please contact the Southwest Community Group Development Officer, Dominique Toyra, on the contact details above.

We are run by carers, with carers, for carers of adults with mental health problems. Our aims are to: • Support and inform each other – through monthly groups, a phone line, informal advocacy and financial help – so that we know we are not alone • Help each other develop the knowledge skills and confidence to do the best we can for our loved one with mental health problems • Provide information about training, helpful local agencies and rights • Work with carers to strengthen their voice as experts by experience so that the limited resources available to mental health and social care are put to the best possible use • Engage constructively with NHS and local authority commissioners and the NHS Provider Trust Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust (CPFT), to improve services – injecting where necessary a sense of urgency and an element of challenge
